Hotel New York Rotterdam

Hotel New York

Hotel New York is a hotel in Rotterdam based in the former office building of the Holland America Line. At the time of opening in 1993, it was the first new venture that dared to settle on the Kop van Zuid, the center extension on the south bank of the Maas. Only when the Erasmus Bridge was unveiled in 1996 did the hotel get a short connection to the city center. The hotel has been open since the opening of a station for a regular water taxi. Since 1997 there is also a metro station nearby named station Wilhelminaplein.

Holland America line

The steam shipping company, founded in 1871 and carrying passengers from the Netherlands to America, was called the Holland-America Line (HAL) in 1896. Rotterdam-based entrepreneurs Antoine Plate and Otto Reuchlin founded the shipping company with the help of Marten Mees and Lodewijk Pincoffs who had an eye for the increasing emigration to the New World. In the first 25 years of its existence, the Holland-America Line transported around 400,000 emigrants.

The Holland America Line quickly established itself at the Wilhelminapier with large impressive passenger ships. In the heyday of the HAL, almost the entire pier was in use by the company. Three buildings of the Holland America Line are still on Wilhelminapier. These are in addition to the main office, the arrival hall from 1949 nowadays used as a Cruise Terminal and the workshop building Las Palmas, both buildings designed by architects Van den Broek and Bakema.
